How AI Sports Picks Actually Work (And Why 52.4% Matters)
Every sports analytics service today claims to use "AI." Few explain what that means. Here's how the HyperLeezus model actually works — and why breakeven is the only number that matters.
The one number: 52.4%
At standard -110 juice, you need to win 52.38% of bets to break even. Every analysis, every model, every signal is only valuable if it pushes you above that threshold. Below it and you're paying the sportsbook to lose slowly.
The consensus: sharp professional bettors average 54–58% ATS over large samples. Nobody wins 70%. Anyone claiming otherwise is lying to you.
What the model actually does
The HyperLeezus pick engine runs 10+ signals per game:
- Market consensus probability — the implied win probability aggregated across 15+ sportsbooks. The market is efficient. We start here.
- ML model divergence — where our XGBoost ensemble disagrees with the market. This is the real edge signal, equivalent to what Rithmm calls "DTM" (Distance to Market).
- Rolling 10-game form — season averages get diluted by games from October. A team's last 10 games is more predictive, especially in May/June playoffs.
- Rest differential — back-to-back games are a provable edge. Teams on no rest perform measurably worse.
- Line movement — when a line moves against the public, that's sharp money. We flag it.
- Weather — for outdoor NFL and MLB, wind above 15 mph demonstrably suppresses scoring.
Why we only show picks above 4% edge
A 2% edge sounds meaningful. It isn't. After vig, a 2% model edge produces near-zero expected profit and gets wiped by variance. We require a 4% minimum before a pick appears — that's the threshold where the math gets interesting over a meaningful sample.
The honest answer on accuracy
Our measured model accuracy is around 55% ATS. At -110, that's approximately +2.6% ROI per bet. Not a get-rich-quick scheme — a measurable statistical edge over the long run. The goal is to be better than random, transparent about it, and let you size bets accordingly.
